Thank you to all those that were able to attend our AGM meeting last night. We had a productive evening and welcomed in several new board members. Last night GUSC presented the first annual Presidents Award, this award was given to one player from each competitive team (excluding Recreation and Academy). The awardees, chosen by the coaches, are individuals who best exemplify our club--by being a good teammate, a leader, a hard worker and a solid representative of the club.

Director of Recreation:

GUSC is currently interviewing candidates for its vacant Director of Recreation position; individual will work with developmental of players ages 6 to 12 years old as well as manage all coaches, rosters and schedule. GUSC is looking to fill this position in time for the fall 2012 season. Our Recreation division has grown to approximately 200 kids—with teams in the U6, U9, U10 and U12 age groups. Ideal candidate will be asked to coach 1 team, organize practice and game schedules, communicate with coaches and families—and determine practice plans for coaches, many of whom are volunteer dads with no background in the sport. Position is ideal for individuals who are looking to enter the coaching arena. GUSC has a development-first philosophy, and all of our programs’ curricula focus heavily on improving a players’ technical ability on the ball. Licenses and experience coaching are preferred, but not required.

Requirements:

¡ Must have reliable transportation
¡ Must be punctual and dependable
¡ Must pass a background check

2012 Spring Fever Classic: SUCCESS!

Thank you to all our volunteers, coaches, players, teams and vendors. You all made our Spring Fever Classic a h-u-g-e success. Competition was good and fierce, but fair play was evident throughout. Our hard-working Tournament Committee is off on vacation resting up – and looking forward to next year. Hope to see you then!

Belmont Abbey College and GUSC have joined forces to provide a comprehensive, weeklong soccer camp experience for kids ages U6 to U16 -- June 25-29. The camp will be held at the Abbey and will offer a Morning Strikers Session (U9 to U16, from 8:30 am to 11 am) and an Evening FUN-damentals Session (U6 to U13, 7 pm to 8:30 pm). Introducing the Home Field Advantage Committee

Dear Members:

In recent months we asked for volunteers for several committees that are poised to address club needs -- from fundraising to new tournaments to marketing. The Home Field Advantage Committee was created to address our need for land/real estate on which to build fields for training and games -- and ultimately, enough real estate to call our own -- complete with training fields, game fields, a club house and office.

Michael Robinson, a parent on the U12 Boys team, will head up this committee. A local businessman and Physician Assistant, Mr. Robinson knows all too well that we are only as strong as our relationships. This is why, before he gets started -- making phone calls and knocking on doors, he asked the executive board to send a plea to our members who may be realtors, city workers, public officials, business owners, Parks and Rec employees, bankers and/or persons engaged in obtaining financing for non-profits. In short, Mr. Robinson -- as well as the club -- understands that this very elaborating effort will be for naught without a group effort.

If you would like to help this cause, please let us know, and we will connect you with Mr. Robinson. There is no obligation on your part to join this committee; we just want to make sure that we look from within for help first.

Certainly, this is a huge endeavor -- we realize these are unchartered waters for GUSC – but it is an endeavor that is necessary if GUSC is to grow into the club that we can truly say is the premier club for Gaston County.

Dr. Chuma Ononye Scholarship Fund for Girls

Established in November 2010, the Dr. Chuma Ononye Scholarship Fund for Girls was created to afford soccer-playing opportunities for girls who might not otherwise have the means to play the sport. Created by Gaston United Soccer Club for Dr. Ononye, who passed away Nov. 13, 2010, the scholarship fund benefits girls because Dr. Ononyehadtwo daughters, Adaora and Nneka, who play soccer, and also because he was an avid fan of the game. GUSC Inks Partnership with Dick's Sporting Goods

Gaston United Soccer Club is pleased to announce that Dick’s Sporting Goods, the largest U.S.-based full-line sporting goods retailer, as the “official Sporting Goods retailer” of the club. With the opening of their Gastonia store in November 2010, the Pittsburgh-based chain which sells outdoors and sports-specific clothing as well as equipment for sports from soccer to archery, has aligned its efforts with the 20-year-old soccer club, which has 30 teams – 15 competitive and 15 Recreational – with a total membership of 250 players.

Gastonia Spine & Sport Partners With GUSC

Jan. 21, 2012 -- Gaston United Soccer Club has announced a two-year associate sponsorship with Gastonia Spine & Sport, a new chiropractic practice which opened for business last December.

As the club’s official chiropractic practice, Gastonia Spine & Sport, located in the Hoffman Village shopping center in Gastonia, is directed by Dr. Aaron Stump, a chiropractor and certified chiropractic sports physician. “We can have a long and beneficial relationship,” said Dr. Stump whose 2,400-square-foot office is a state-of-the-art clinic equipped to treat and prevent injuries and conditions affecting muscular, skeletal and nervous systems.

Per the agreement, Stump will offer GUSC members – including players, coaches and parents -- an initial consultation and exam at no cost to them or their insurance, a $75 value. All successive treatment programs will be discounted as well. “I am dedicated to the education of athletes of all ages and plan on educating our community to lead healthier, more active lives,” continued Dr. Stump, who is married with two young daughters and has previously worked with athletes in various sports, including football and soccer.

Dr. Stump graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from California State Polytechnic University. The Southern California native received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in April of 2004 from Southern California University of Health Sciences. During his internship he worked with Family Medicine, Radiology, Neurology, Orthopedic, and Sports Medicine doctors at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital. Before moving to North Carolina in 2010, Dr. Stump had a private practice in Omaha Nebraska, and Surprise Arizona.

“This partnership is great for our club, especially as we look to renew and forge new partnerships with local businesses,” said GUSC president Mark Wright. “With Dr. Stump’s experience working with athletes, this was a natural partnership for us."

In addition to treatment services, Gastonia Spine & Sport will have a presence at GUSC’s Spring Fever Classic tournament (May 4-6), and Dr. Stump and his associates will attend some home games at Martha Rivers Park.

"We are excited to be partners with Gaston United; our contemporary, active-care approach while enlisting traditional treatment methods for relieving pain and restoring function is well suited to soccer,” said Stump, who will also conduct education forums with families and coaches on treating – and avoiding -- certain injuries.

* Coach will not allow dangerous play by his/her players
