Successful Supplemental Tryouts
If these smiling faces are any indication, Supplemental Tryouts was a huge hit for players who took to Martha Rivers Park for a chance for GUSC coaches to assess their skills and level of play. Coaches Jeff, Tatum, Diego, John, Patrick and Stefan all led drills and small-sided games with kids from as young as 6 to as old as 14. "It was a good day," said Coach Tatum. "This gives us good momentum heading into the spring." Special thanks to Tire Country in Gastonia for the donated soccer balls. For all your tire and auto service needs, please visit them at 714 Union Road or call (704) 866-9144.
Remembering Dr. Chuma Ononye on Fun Day
Fun Day is special because of Dr. Chuma Ononye, a former parent who passed away last November. The day to celebrate the end of another Recreation season--the Dr. Chuma Ononye Fun Day--honors a man who loved the game and loved seeing kids play. Chuma’s wife, Lisa, and their two daughters remembered the Arsenal-loving, hard-nosed defender with a commemorative bench at Martha Rivers Park. "He would be honored to see this," Lisa said. The day also spotlighted the Dr. Chuma Ononye Scholarship Fund, created shortly after he passed. "I can hear Chuma now," said Jeff Phillips, the director of Rec: ’Well played!’ " MORE.
